Joanna + Aaron

Joanna and Aaron possess a true and unassuming love.  A love that radiates and infuses itself into the cells of all those around them.  It was in the way Aaron couldn’t stop stealing glances at his gorgeous bride, and in the way when standing near one another their hands would reach out for the other’s at the exact same moment.  Joanna’s calm assuredness mirrored Aaron’s quiet excitement, and they both perfectly balanced the anticipation and enthusiasm of their wedding party and family.  Everyone could tell they were perfect for each other.

The two shots above were taken a week before the wedding, at our Worthington studio during Joanna’s bridal session.  She made my job so easy.  Joanna and Aaron’s wedding day started with Aaron arriving at his future in-law’s home to pick up Joanna, keeping true to Chinese custom.

Joanna’s bridesmaids, not wanting to let her go easily, set up tasks for Aaron and his men to pass.  Starting with this cocktail concoction…  …and yoga poses……and retrieving the frozen house key out of ice cubes.  While Steve was documenting Aaron’s trial-by-fire I got to slip away and catch a few quiet moments with Joanna…

Finally satisfied, the girls let Aaron pass…And on to the Franklin Park Conservatory…Running late, Joanna’s bridesmaids sprang into action to get her ready for the ceremony…

Another one of Steve’s shots.  Yes, sometimes after I go through Steve’s photos I have image envy.

One of my favorite photos of Steve’s from the day…Work it, Aaron, work it.
Equally as endearing as Joanna and Aaron’s relationship was the bond between Aaron and his brother.  I hardly noticed it when I was taking this photo, but the joining of hands between Aaron and his brother in this photo makes it one of my favorite group photos we’ve ever taken.  Light.  The light that day was as flat as a pancake.  A pancake that had been stomped on by the entire bridal party.  The lighting on their wedding day was drastically different from the crisp morning light Mother Nature graced us with for their engagement session.  Flat lighting is always fantastic for gorgeous skin tones, evenly-lit portraits, but when the grey skies roll in sometimes, creatively, I get…stuck.  I find myself looking for the little highlight on someone’s cheekbone, or for the sun to flare out from behind a tree.  Something that makes me say “gotcha” from behind the camera.  But the one below, along with many others from the day were gotcha photos.  I told Joanna to look over at Aaron, and the look of calm confidence that passed over her face was one we were familiar with after seeing how Joanna and Aaron look at each other.  It’s one of my favorite images from the day.      After we left Franklin Park we headed to a spot where Steve and I had never shot.  Bicentennial Park!  Aaron and Joanna, GQ-ing it up!!Why I love shooting with Steve:  while he was getting this shot……I was getting this one.  Not only does he work to get unique angles and fantastic imagery, but nothing beats nailing a shoot with my beau.  LaScala for the reception…
